The Journey Begins

“It’s only a crazy dream until you do it.”
I’ve always written, but I don’t think I’ve ever formed particularly good writing habits – at least, not the kind of habits I’ll probably need to become the kind of writer I want to be. My greatest personal acheivement was completing a PhD thesis a few years ago and becoming a published scholar. Writing for academia though, it’s a different beast. I became a very precise author. Structure, argument, each individual sentence and the composition of every single paragraph – it was like surgery, towards the end. The process disciplined me. It taught me to really think about the words I put on paper – what they say, how they say it. Whether they make a point or simply raise more questions.

All this is to say – I feel like I need to unlearn some of those habits. I want to write spontaneously again, and for this reason I’ve finally started a blog. ‘My Blog’ – the one I’ve said for years I would start but never did…until now. Undoubtedly, countless blogs have started the same way. A New Years Resolution, a promise to oneself that lasts until the end of January…maybe this will be the same.

I decided to keep the default ‘first blog’ title, ‘The Journey Begins.’ I wonder how many of these are out there. The firsts of many, the first and lasts; good intentions, dreams, soliloquies, musings, travel notes. It really does seem as good a place as any to begin. It’s only a crazy dream until you do it.
